Disparitions Nouveaux livres à signaler Revues : trois numéros récents Cours et conférences : automne 2010 Conférences tenues récemment Un nouveau site Web à l’Université Marquette     (Renseignements tirés en grande partie du Lonergan Studies Newsletter (http://www.lonergan-lri.ca/lonergan-studies-newsletter) Disparitions Le père Joseph Flanagan, s.j., est décédé en mai dernier. Louis Roy a rédigé à son sujet le texte suivant : Le jésuite américain Joseph Flanagan (1925-2010) fit beaucoup pour diffuser la pensée de Bernard Lonergan (1904-1984). Durant les années 1970 il invita Fred Lawrence à enseigner au Boston College, organisa les Lonergan Workshops du mois de juin et y établit un Lonergan Center. Il écrivit Quest for Self-Knowledge : An Essay in Lonergan’s Philosophy, publié en 1997 par University of Toronto Press. Cet ouvrage est le fruit de ses cours portant sur le livre Insight. Parmi les points originaux, notons ses pages sur l’histoire des mathématiques et de la physique moderne. Une anecdote : alors qu’il terminait sa traduction espagnole d’Insight, Francisco Quijano me posa quelques questions d’interprétation. J’eus recours à « Joe » (comme ses amis l’appelaient) ; il me donna, sans aucune hésitation, des réponses à chaque question, qui furent entièrement satisfaisantes et pour moi et pour Francisco. Il fut le doyen du Département de philosophie au Boston College pendant de nombreuses années. Avec quelques collègues, il conçut un cours pour étudiants de premier cycle, intitulé « Perspectives on Western Culture », qui constitue une introduction à la philosophie et à la théologie, basée sur les plus grands textes de l’Occident. Cette introduction, de six heures par semaine pendant toute une année, donne aux jeunes étudiants la chance d’observer constamment les interactions entre la raison et la foi. Il croyait fermement en l’amitié, tout comme Aristote, Thomas d’Aquin et Lonergan, et il la mettait en pratique joyeusement et efficacement. Bien qu’il ne soit plus physiquement parmi nous, il demeure un ami précieux et son amitié, plus intense que jamais, lui permet de nous être présent à la manière des bienheureux. -Louis Roy Nous regrettons également la disparition récente de Charlotte Tansey, Frank Greany et Martin O’Hara, qui tous trois avaient accepté de donner une entrevue pour notre site Web. Ces trois personnes ont bien connu Bernard Lonergan et ont œuvré longtemps à l’Institut Thomas More de Montréal. Nouveaux livres à signaler Beer, Peter, s.j. An Introduction to Bernard Lonergan, Victoria (Australie), Sid Harta Publishers, 2010. Il s’agit là d’une introduction à l’ensemble de la pensée de Lonergan, abordée à partir d’un film de Alfred Hitchcock, Dial M for Murder et d’ouvrages littéraires tels que Les Misérables de Victor Hugo. Le style est clair, pédagogique. L’ouvrage est un guide de référence qui présente fidèlement et simplement les grandes lignes de l’héritage de Lonergan, depuis l’appropriation de soi jusqu’aux fonctions constituantes. Crowe, Frederick E. Lonergan and the Level of Our Times. Edited by Michael Vertin. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2010. Une équipe autour de Michael Vertin a entrepris de réunir les écrits de F. Crowe, un des commentateurs les plus éclairants de la pensée de Lonergan. Ce troisième recueil, le dernier, réunit vingt-huit articles des années 1961 à 2004, dont cinq inédits. La première partie (Pierrot Lambert) est consacrée à un parcours biographique qui cherche à saisir le sujet Lonergan « en tant que sujet » … en abordant les différents combats de la vie de Lonergan à la lumière du « moment esthétique» de « l’élévation », l’un des grands leitmotivs de son oeuvre. Après un chapitre consacré à des images de Lonergan, Philip McShane esquisse brillamment dans la deuxième partie l’horizon de Lonergan : 1) Le contexte dominant de la vie de Lonergan, 2) Trois grands changements culturels dans la vie de Lonergan et 3) Recherche, interprétation, histoire (History, His Story) Deux ouvrages d’Andrew Beards ont paru récemment : Beards, Andrew.
